A Japanese lacquered wood iki – ningyo sculpture depicting a farmer digging the ground with a shovel.
Bent with a curved back and dressed in a thong and flip-flops, he helps himself with his two arms to forcefully lever towards the ground.
The entire sculpture highlights the muscular fatigue that is also perceived by the expression on his face.
Edo period mid 19th century
