A Japanese tokata ivory okimono of a sarumawashi.
Unusual scene depicting the frightened monkey (saru) because of the appearance of a toad hidden under the leaves.
An example of the highest quality of the Tokyo school, with very fine details, from the strings of the shoes to the very well-defined hands with each finger spaced to indicate the hidden toad.
Signed Mitsutoshi with kao under the base.
The artist was a member of the Tokyo Chokokai (Tokyo Carvers’ Association) and a talented pupil of the the carver Ishikawa Komei (1852-1913), one of the founding members of the Chokoku Kyogikai (The Carvers’ Foundation Committee) established in 1881. Compare this okimono with the other one by Ishikawa Komei illustrated in our book “Japanese masterpieces Vol I” page 14-15-16-17.
