Satsuma
Satsuma ware – originally from Satsuma Province – enjoyed great fame in the 17th century and influenced the exceptional artistic output production of the following centuries.
In Satsuma ware very fine crackle, which is visible to the naked eye; develops after baking; then this is vitrified or glazed as per the artist’s choice.
In the 19th century great masters of decoration and modelling opened new kilns in the provinces Kyoto, Awata and Osaka, which were very close to one another. Satsuma ceramics revived with new colours, techniques and decoration. Kinkozan Sobei, Yabu Meizan, Seikozan, Makuzu Kozan, Seifu Yohei, Hankinzan, Shoko Takebe, Kaizan and Dozan are among the most popular; many had an industrial output while some others were unknown and only made a few pieces which are therefore rare but of exceptional quality.
